Consumers struggling to boil a perfect runny egg can breathe a sigh of relief with the news they will soon be able to buy a pre-cooked soft-boiled egg that can be heated up in five minutes.

Yowk will be unveiled by supplier The New Egg Company at the International Food Event in London later this month, and will be launched into retail and foodservice from May.

The product is a successor to Pork Farms’ 2013 Dippy Egg prototype - with The New Egg Company spun out of Pork Farms in 2013 to develop it - and had received a “strong reception” in consumer research, said MD Ian Hetherington.

Yowk is a pasteurised egg, sold in a pot with dried bread soldiers, salt & pepper and a spoon. To cook the egg, boiling water is placed in the pot for five minutes, with the lid doubling as an egg cup.

“Pork Farms’ owners Vision Capital recognised the importance of the Dippy Egg concept,” said Hetherington, and decided to “take a step back” to develop it further and protect the brand.

As a result, Yowk was a “much more compelling product” added Hetherington, and offered “real innovation” to an under-developed category.

“It didn’t take off the first time, but the concept was still in its infancy,” he said. “This time, we have undertaken a lot more testing to get the product right, and included a patented spoon – The Spooth – which includes a small tooth to crack open the egg.”

Yowk had attracted interest from a major coffee shop chain and a number of food retailers, claimed Hetherington, with an rsp envisaged at £1.49 for retail and £1.99 in foodservice.
