Waitrose opens first railway station c-store: in pictures

Waitrose unveiled its first ever convenience store located in a railway station today in London’s King’s Cross.

The store, which is Waitrose’ smallest at just 2,500 sq ft, is focused on providing food to go and ready meals.

The store will meet commuters’ needs by providing a bakery, fresh fruit and vegetables, a range of takeaway sandwiches and snacks, and travel essentials such as plug adapters and headphones.

“Travel convenience represents a big opportunity for us. This way, we can engage with customers on the move and with new opportunities,” said Jackie Wharton, director of convenience stores for Waitrose.

“The convenience sector is integral to our growth and opening in King’s Cross Station feels like a natural step for the business following our expansion into Welcome Break service stops. We hope this will be the first of many station branches - however further locations are yet to be confirmed,” said Nigel Keen, director of development for Waitrose.

A further travel convenience store will be opened outside Manchester Piccadilly at the end of September, but this will not be sited within the station concourse.
