Morrisons checkout

All Morrisons staff are to be trained to use checkouts

Morrisons is looking to train all staff to be able to work on its checkouts, insisting the move is designed to better react to customers’ needs.

The Grocer understands the training programme has already been rolled out to some stores but will be extended to all stores this year, and includes those employees working on the retailer’s Market Street counters.

Staff opinion appears divided on the move, with some posters on an online Morrisons staff forum baulking at the idea and others welcoming it.

“I ain’t going on a checkout,” said one member. “They can’t force you to do something you don’t want to do. Nothing in my contract that says I need to be till trained.”

However another looked to ease colleague concerns by writing: “I hated the idea of having to be trained. Now I am trained, I don’t mind it. I like having a change from my department every now and again.”

Another added: “Stores should be run as one whole and less as individual departments.”

Morrisons dismissed speculation that the move was about cost-cutting and making stores run leaner.
