Tesco bamboozled online shoppers with at least 80 contradictory promotions in a single day, a study by online price monitor Profitero has revealed.

In all the examples found on 9 February, Tesco advertised a discount but still listed the higher price when it was added to the basket.

A 70cl Bacardi White Rum, for example, was advertised as ‘was £15.79 now £12.50’, but the price remained £15.79. Many errors have been corrected, but others remained live a week later. This Thursday, a ‘Save 99p’ promotion on Brahma beer, which was due to run until 21 February, still listed the higher price of £4.19.

The 80 errors accounted for 3% of the 2,648 cuts on that day.

A Tesco spokesman said the promotions had been due to go live the following day - when orders would be put together and charged in-store - and insisted customers would be charged the lower, promotional, price when their order was picked.
