Tesco Express stores will scrap the role of duty manager in a major shake-up of senior management.
Staff at the 1,000 sites have been told there will be a 90-day consultation period during which duty managers can apply for the new role of deputy manager. Some will become line managers.
Last year Tesco conducted a similar shake-up at its Tesco superstores and some Extras. One manager said: "That I have to be interviewed for a rebranding of my job and wait three months before a chance of progression is hard to take."
