Cheerfull Gold apples

Cheerfull Gold apples are exclusive to Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s this week started selling the first commercial volumes of Cheerfull Gold - a new apple variety bred and grown in Kent.

The apples are grown by Peter Kedge and Simon Saunders and were bred by John Breach, who runs a private breeding programme in Kent. They are exclusive to Sainsbury’s and will be sold in its Best of British bags (rsp: £1.80) and its Red Dessert Bags (rsp: £1.50) in about 100 stores. As this is the first commercial harvest, volumes are small and Sainsbury’s said the apples would be available “whilst stocks last”.

Its apple and pear technologist, Dr Theresa Huxley, said Sainsbury’s was “thrilled” to support a new homegrown apple. “We look forward to hearing from our customers what they think of this new variety, which has an intense tangy flavour.”
