Kimberly-Clark is to stop manufacturing and selling its core Huggies nappy range in Europe.

The personal care giant said the decision to stop manufacturing and selling the core range, which does not include Pull-Ups, DryNites and Little Swimmers, in Europe (excluding Italy) was the result of the company failing to “build a sustainable profitable nappies business here, despite considerable efforts, time and investment”.

The decision would allow the company to “deliver better returns in the future and place additional resource and investment behind its strongest brands”, it said.

At this time, Kimberly-Clark is proposing the closure or sale of five manufacturing facilities in Europe, including its nappy mill in Barton, UK.

Kimberly-Clark estimated the proposals and related changes, which are expected to be completed by the end of 2013, would affect between 1,300 and 1,500 employees across Europe.

  • This is very bad news for parents as P&G, owners of Pampers will now have a free hand to charge whatever they want, but more importantly they will no longer have to support Pampers with heavy weight promotional activity so hitting hard up parents. The Exec's at P&G Must be laughing all the way to their hefty bonuses

  • Why? It is well documented that girls nappies leek with any other brand than huggies. How can they close and stop the up and coming female generation having a dry bum?? Never mind the parents washing all the soiled clothes. Or are huggies now in cahoot with Persil ??

  • I agree that meany parents are preferring and buying Huggies diapers in detriment of Pampers brand. They rely on the Europe Kimberly-Clark plants from Czech Republic and UK. mamiko.ro

  • I've had no choice but to buy my daughter huggies, saddly when I found out they were stopping was just weeks after giving birth and shelves were empty bar a few boxes of size 2's :( practically every brand gives her really bad nappy rash besides huggies, its a great brand for me cuz she's allergic to others :( bad decision Huggies!!!!

  • Why close and simply not increase the price? This is horrible. Huggies were the only nappies that didn't leak or give my babies a rash or leave marks. If only I knew this before, I would buy year's worth of supply. I would be ok to pay premium for Huggies. Now I'm stuck with many choices, all of which are bad.
