Lidl has abandoned an experiment selling foie gras in some of its UK stores.

It said the decision to sell the delicacy, made with the livers of force-fed ducks, was based on customer requests. But less than a year on it has been abandoned, to the delight of animal rights groups.

"Lidl was petitioned by animal welfare organisations who expressed concern about the product and we withdrew it immediately from sale," said a Lidl spokeswoman.

Animal rights group Viva! said it would be stepping up its campaign to make Britain a foie gras-free zone.
