Asda Grantham

Poor availability was a big feature of this week’s Grocer 33, with a number of stores not stocking several of the items. The winning store, Asda in Stowmarket, was no exception, but it won out thanks to its friendly and helpful staff.

Staff were always “polite and helpful” when asked to help. The lady at the checkout was especially praised for explaining to our shopper how to use its Asda Price Guarantee website.

Tesco Hyde was a “large airy space that was really tidy and smart” and “extremely pleasant” to shop. However, though some staff offered to check for missing items, some had to be asked to do so.

The car park at Waitrose Wimbledon was “a disaster” - very busy and with narrow car parking spaces. But once inside, our shopper said the store was “excellent” with “a feelgood factor you don’t get in any other SW19 supermarket”. However, there was a lengthy wait at the checkout and when our shopper asked whether more tills would be opened, the answer was no.

Though our shopper said Morrisons in Beverley was “a pleasant experience overall”, with lots of offers and an “impressive” pizza counter, signage for soft drinks was in the wrong place, so it took a while to find the right aisle. Not all staff checked for items and the lady on the checkout, though efficient, “wasn’t too friendly”.

In fifth place, Sainsbury’s Selsdon was quiet and relaxing, but our shopper had to “search half the shop” before finding staff to help. And our shopper was caught behind a soup spillage at the till, which led to a “massive delay”.
