Asda Brazilian steak pizza

Most students are a little lost in the kitchen. A diet of burnt pasta, microwave mug cake and frozen pizzas is the norm. One girl I shared a university flat with ate a jar of Nutella each day with her hands.

In the Brothers Green: Eats! (MTV, 9pm, April 28) Mike and Josh Greenfield tackled that cooking-averse market with aplomb. For the quirky New York pair it’s all about satisfying the munchies: quick, greasy and easy to prepare. And perfect for a hangover.

Their repertoire included a banana and chocolate microwave cake topped with melted peanut butter, ice cream made in a freezer bag, and a China-inspired tower burger so big it would have to be shared with at least four friends.

Crème de la crème of their off-the-wall inspirations though was undoubtedly the bagelnut - a jam-filled doughnut with a cream cheese glaze, topped with sausage, egg, and maple ketchup. It captured the growing trend of hybrid food, such as the pizzataco and the cronut, and sold it to likely the only demographic with the time and inclination to give it a go themselves.

And it’s all served up in their own take on a dingy student flat, albeit one with an expensive-looking set of knives and a fancy blender.

In fact, the only moment I stopped believing they were just a couple of 20-somethings on a student loan-sized budget was when Mike said he needed to “briefly prep the ginger” - four words I’m pretty sure no student has ever uttered.

Avoid blips like that, however, and this offbeat pair could be on to something.
