Potato and veg supplier QV Foods is considering closing its potato packing site in Cambridgeshire and consolidating its entire potato business at its site in Holbeach, Lincolnshire.

The company has launched a 45-day consultation with the 140 staff at the March site. It stressed the consolidation would create 125 new jobs at Holbeach and it would endeavour to find suitable roles there for staff at March.

Consolidation was necessary to help QV “address its cost base and capacity needs for current business volumes whilst creating headfroom for future growth”.

“The owners of QV Foods are fully committed to growing the business for the future, but the company has to have an efficient cost platform on which to do this,” a spokesman added. “The proposal to consolidate the potato business at the Holbeach site, which sits at the centre of our farming and packing operations, is a logical step to achieving this. We are now entering into consultation with our staff about this proposal; in the meantime it’s business as usual.”
