The Co-operative Food has demonstrated a hunger to make life easier for apprentices by extending its relationship with the National Union of Students.

Holders of the union’s £11-a-year NUS Apprentice extra cards have access to more than 100 discounts.

Money raised from the card will fund The National Society of Apprentices which represents the needs and welfare of apprentices and vocational learners.

The Co-operative Food will offer a 10% discount on groceries at 2,800 stores. It is the only supermarket to be involved in the scheme. The mutual’s existing relationship with NUS extra entitles student cardholders to receive a 10% discount on Co-op groceries.

Freda Cronk, The Co-op’s head of marketing communications, said: “We are pleased that our work with NUS now supports apprentices too at a key time in their life as they develop the skills that will serve them well in the future.”

NUS Apprentice Extra spokeswoman Raechel Mattey, said apprentices did not always have access to the student benefits typically offered to people in higher education.

“The Apprentice extra card has been developed to help to address that,” she said.
