Aldi is trialling an electric refrigerated trailer, which can be charged at its regional distribution centre in Cheshire.
On the move, it converts the lorry’s kinetic energy into electricity to keep the trailer’s batteries charged.
It means the refrigerated trailer emits zero carbon and particulate matters, according to Aldi.
“We want to do as much as possible to reduce our environmental impact,” said Aldi UK corporate responsibility director Liz Fox.
“That’s why we have been carbon neutral since January 2019 and use energy from renewable sources.”
Sainsbury’s has been trialling similar electric refrigerated trailers since last year.
Aldi is also currently trialling alternative fuels for its lorry fleet, including compressed natural gas and hydrotreated vegetable oil.
From this year, all its new trailers are also using solar power.
