Alpro has expanded its almond drink line-up with the launch of a new unroasted and unsweetened variant.

The new drink will go on sale in Sainsbury’s stores nationwide from next week in a one-litre UHT format (rsp: £1.69), and is naturally low in fat, Alpro said, containing just 13kcal per 100ml.

It delivered a “soft and fresh flavour” which can be enjoyed on its own, over cereal, whizzed up in a smoothie or in cooking, said UK marketing controller Vicky Upton, and complemented the brand’s existing original and unsweetened almond drinks.

The product was designed to offer consumers “a unique taste profile and to respond to growing demand for variety within the plant-based market”, she added, and was a “natural next step” for the brand.

“The new variant is made using unroasted almonds which will appeal to different taste and flavour preferences and attract a whole new base of consumers to the category.”

The launch will be backed by a combination of shopper marketing, press and PR support, and comes on the back of ongoing success for the brand, with sales up 22.9% year-on-year and volume sales up 21.6% and more than a fifth of households now regularly buying Alpro products [Nielsen 52 w/e 26 March 2016].
