Lidl is to launch its next limited-run Wine Cellar range with a strong focus on Hungarian wines.
The range, which rolls out across Lidl’s store estate from 27 July, features a total of 41 wines from Hungary, Austria, Germany and France, with Hungary accounting for 15.
These include Dereszla Tokaji Furmint 2016 (11.5% abv), L Simon Nagykócsag Sauvignon Blanc 2016 (13% abv) and Lellei Balaton Rosé 2015 (12.5% abv).
Hungary was “gathering pace as a winemaking country that can do it all”, said the retailer. “Lidl is working with a mixture of producers such as Grand Tokaj and smaller boutique wineries such as Bolyki in Eger to deliver highly competitive value to its customers.” As such, all Hungarian wines in the range cost from £4.99 to £7.99, while the most expensive bottle in the wider range costs £17.99.
Each of the lines was selected by the discounter’s buying teams in consultation with three Masters of Wine, who were asked to rate each bottle from one to 100. Bottles that scored below 80 did not make it into the range.
It comes as Lidl is revamping its BWS aisles, with a shift towards craft beer underway. A spokeswoman previously told The Grocer the update would be “extending over some new categories in the lager section” with a “big focus” on craft.
It has also extended its RTD offering with new Bourbon & Coke, Rum & Coke and Peyton’s & Lemonade cans, and boosted its spirits offer with the introduction of a new Ben Bracken single malt whisky selection.
