Pie brand Fray Bentos is set to break out of pastry - into ambient soups. Fray Bentos soups are set to roll out in the autumn in five classic flavours - minestrone, vegetable, cream of mushroom, cream of tomato and cream of chicken - and are positioned at the value end of the market (rsp: 69p). The range will be the first extension to Fray Bentos since it was acquired last November by Baxters Food Group, which says it plans to launch more products to build on the success of the core Fray Bentos brand.

 

Hunger Breaks Hot Pots

Not content with buying up Premier’s canned business, Princes is further developing its ambient offering with new pot snacks under its Hunger Breaks brand - until now most associated with the all-day breakfast-in-a-can. The microwaveable pots (rsp: £1.49) are available in seven flavours, from chicken chow mein to beef bolognese.

 

Del Monte Light

Del Monte is currently rolling out a new canned range aimed, it says, at the quarter of consumers who like their fruit in syrup rather than juice, but worry about their waistlines. The range comprises pineapple slices, peach slices and a fruit cocktail (all rsp: £1.09) and uses sucralose to halve calories versus standard syrupy canned fruit.

 

Amy’s Kitchen Hearty Soups

US brand Amy’s Kitchen is looking to capitalise on the growing market for chunky soups with its new Hearty range. Available in French country vegetable, Spanish rice & red bean and rustic Italian vegetable variants, each soup (rsp: £1.99) is organic, gluten-free and packed with vegetables, providing three of a consumer’s five-a-day.
