Traditionally, beer is made with just four ingredients: water, malted barley (or other grains), hops and yeast.
Mushrooms rarely got a mention. That changed in 2020, when 0.5% abv beer brand Fungtn launched what it claimed were the UK’s first brews made with medicinal lion’s mane, reishi and chaga mushrooms.
Six years on, several brands – including Collider, Nu Wave and Impossibrew – are touting “mood-enhancing” AF beers made with mushrooms and other ingredients carrying functional health claims.
