A large proportion of vegetarians regularly sneak in the odd steak sandwich, claimed meat bosses.
A study into eating habits revealed many self-proclaimed vegetarians regularly including red meat in their diet.
The data from TNS Family Food Panel also revealed fewer than half of the people who claimed to be vegetarians actually are, with only 42% of them completely eschewing red meat, fish or poultry.
TNS also revealed only 4% of the population is vegetarian, a figure that has stayed static for the last few years.
Chris Lamb, marketing manager with the MLC, said he was “quietly satisfied” with the news. “It’s the sort of thing we’ve known for a long time, but we haven’t been able to quantify it before.
“Vegetarians are still only 4% of the population and have been for donkey’s years. There’s no growth in vegetarianism.”
He said sales supported the findings with consumption of beef topping one million tonnes in 2003.
