If you listened closely on 1 November, as Asda unveiled its Christmas ad, you’ll have heard everyone involved in this McDonald’s campaign clapping hand to forehead: “Oh no, they’ve done the Grinch as well!”

Arriving almost a month later, McD’s Grinch has the disadvantage of seeming to shoppers like it’s piggybacking on Asda’s – even though it was surely planned in isolation.

The fast food version is truer to the original story: it’s set in Whoville and the green guy has, initially at least, a bit of authentic malevolence about him (Asda’s dad seemed slightly grumpy at worst). But what’s his plan to ruin Christmas? Gherkin seasoning on fries and odd socks, both of which feature in the Grinch Meal, which you can choose to order, or not.

Can’t see that even mildly spoiling anyone’s day. A wonderful Christmas for everyone at the Dr Seuss estate, though.
