Here’s a low-budget ad from Walkers to keep us ticking over until it launches a bigger ‘Flavourite’ campaign next month.

These days, if we’re shown a man phoning a pal to ask what he’s up to, it means we’re in for a message about mental health and the importance of talking things out. But in this promo for Walkers’ Cheese & Onion, it’s merely an excuse for some silliness.

Our guy explains he’s having a sarnie and some crisps, and when asked to elaborate on the flavour, sings the word ‘cheeeeeese’ in a ridiculous, lengthy falsetto, prompting his flatmate to do the same thing. More people are involved via more phone lines, and the gag escalates.

It is of course a homage to Budweiser’s (in)famous ‘Whassup’ ad – which might explain the use of landline phones. That ad came out, almost unbelievably, in 1999. So it’s a win-win, delivering nostalgia or novelty depending on viewer age. Unless of course you find the whole thing irritating.
