Asda has been accused of putting food hygiene at risk to cut costs.

Reports suggest that an Asda employee has made an official complaint to the company that frozen and chilled food was allegedly left out at its Gateshead store for six hours on 26 May.

The GMB union has also claimed that the number of staff at warehouses who monitor the dates and rotation of stock has been cut.

Asda said that the allegations were being investigated. It added that each warehouse has appointed a person qualified in occupational safety and that a number of health and safety hygiene co-ordinators were working towards recognised qualifications.
