Asda staff who have been saving in the supermarket’s share scheme over the last five years have doubled their money.

Asda said that on the back of parent company Wal-Mart’s current stock price staff who have saved £30 per month since 1997 through shares bought in the world’s biggest retailer - discounted by 20% - would get £5000 from their investment.

Asda boss Tony DeNunzio said: “Every day our colleagues sow the seeds of success at - it is only right that they reap the rewards.”

Some 2,700 employees will get shares worth some £13m from the plan they joined in1997, with a further 8,800 staff receiving free shares worth £1.5m through Asda’s colleague share ownership plan.
