What motivates Manx shoppers' store choice? The Grocer took to the streets of Douglas to find out Jennifer Brown, 52, machinist "I use Safeway the most because it's right next to where I work in Douglas. "It's very convenient for people who work in town, and I think they offer good value. I have been round the other stores, but they've never really tempted me to go to any of them on a regular basis. "Overall I think all of the supermarkets are pretty much the same, there doesn't seem to be a great deal of difference." David Reardon, 20, student "I use mainly Shoprite and sometimes Tesco. Shoprite is quite good for fresh stuff and the Douglas store is very near my house. "If I can be bothered to go to Tesco, it's got a very good range of products. But Shoprite is convenient and it's quite good now that they've redone the store. I don't think price is that major a factor for me." Sue Hughes, 21, assistant manager "I use Tesco and Safeway, mainly because they are the easiest and convenient to get to. Shoprite is too far for me. "The customer service in Tesco is also very good. I do worry about price, and things are more expensive out here, especially bread. Things are generally more expensive here and not just in the supermarkets. But you can't just go over to Liverpool all the time because it costs a fortune." Angela McGowan, 39, electronics engineer "At the moment I use Tesco or Marks & Spencer. Tesco is a bit outside of town and it's very easy to park. Because you don't have to go all the way into town it's more convenient. "The service at Tesco is also good, there are hardly ever any queues. Price isn't really a big issue, as long as I can get in and out easily, and I think Tesco offers good value. "I'm not keen on the food Shoprite offers, and Safeway is too disorganised." John McKeefry, 26, tram driver "I use Shoprite and Tesco because it's convenient for me. I know the layouts of the stores and it's easy. "I think that the selection and quality in both supermarkets is good. Price isn't that important and they all seem fairly reasonable price wise. "However, I don't think we get good value here on things like bread and dairy products." Chris McEvoy, 37, baker "I use Safeway, mainly because it's the nearest and most convenient for me. I think if Tesco was nearer I would probably go there instead, the same with Shoprite, I don't feel any loyalty to any of them. "I don't think price is really that much of a consideration, they all seem to keep prices pretty much the same as each other. Everything is a lot cheaper over in the UK, but because we're a small island, people seem to say keep the prices higher'." {{FEAT. COVER }}
