Convenience store operator Conveco has appointed Tony O'Neill, former managing director of Somerfield Stores, chief executive.
O'Neill replaces MD Allen Hutchby who left last week. He will be seeking to improve Conveco's growth programme, in which store numbers have climbed from 53 to 64 since 2001.
The new chief executive has a history of steering troubled companies to improved profitability, including Minit UK, owner of Sketchley cleaners, Supasnaps and Motor Minit, when he was appointed chief executive.
O'Neill said: "My brief is to look at all options to improve Conveco's performance. The business has had some degree of difficulty over the past months, but nothing on the scale that I dealt with at Minit."
O'Neill began his career in food retail as a graduate trainee at Marks and Spencer in 1977.
He joined Somerfield in 1991 as an associate buying director for fresh and frozen food, and become md of Somerfield Stores in 1999. He left in December 1999 for Minit UK and moved to become chairman of household cleaning products supplier HomePride last year.
