German discounter Lidl is to add a new competitive twist to the sector with its first Dublin city centre store. It is to become the anchor tenant in a new shopping mall planned for Moore Street, just a few hundred yards from the Dublin outlet operated by its big German rival, Aldi. Lidl is already a significant player in the Irish market, having opened seven regional stores in recent months. The 14,000 sq ft outlet in Moore Street is believed to be one of a number the chain is planning for Dublin city, as both it and Aldi strive to make an impact at the lower end of the food market through heavy discounting on a limited range of own brand labels. {{NEWS }}
