The messy process of marinating meat could soon be a thing of the past with the launch of Seasoned Skewers - a product described as a fast, effective and mess-free alternative to a marinade that infuses a meat with flavour from the inside with a skewer. The range of skewers is made of birchwood and is infused with natural flavours, which permeate the meat during the cooking process.

Having already proven a hit in the US, the product was introduced to the UK market this month by Sussex-based food distributor The Buddha Brunch.

The company, which was set up by food enthusiasts Kirsty Ho and Rebecca Cardozo a year ago, is looking to sell the skewers through the multiples and the convenience trade. The duo are confident they can emulate the success of the product in the US.

"Seasoned Skewers is one of our most exciting discoveries, offering a quick and mess-free solution to marinating meats and vegetables," said Ho, who said the newcomer had received a warm reception from buyers.

"The UK consumer is known for being one of the most adventurous and is always on the lookout for new and exciting products and foods," she said.

The flavour of the skewers, which come in six different varieties, including an Indian, Thai and Mexican offering, is described as being intense.

To give an idea of the potency, two skewers will deliver enough seasoning to flavour a medium to large roast chicken throughout.

"There are currently no similar products available on the UK market and the technology used to create the skewers is patented, so it is unlikely that anything similar will be available here for some time," said Ho, who discovered the skewers at a food show in San Francisco.

The aim of The Buddha Brunch is to provide retailers with innovative new food and drink products from around the globe. Prior to setting it up, Ho helped Asian exporters gain entry into the UK, while Cardozo used to be involved in Food & Drink Expo, which is now organised by William Reed Publishing, the owner of The Grocer. Other products distributed by The Buddha Brunch includes a range of artisan sauces and a line of soy-based snacks.
