The Beringer Blass wine division of the Foster's has acquired 51% of Kangaroo Ridge which sold more than 250,000 cases of wine in 2002, to retail chains in Germany, Belgium, France, Holland and Switzerland.

It is a low-end commercial wine, competing against such brands as Lindemans and Jacobs Creek, and retailing for less than €5 ($A9).

Kangaroo Ridge founder John Geber will continue to manage the business for the partnership.

“My dream for Kangaroo Ridge was to create the most Australian of all the Australian wines sold in Europe and consumers have taken to the style enthusiastically,” Geber said.

“But one bloke lugging a swag of samples around Europe can't make the most of the opportunity.

“I'm very happy to have Beringer Blass' help to reach more customers.”
