Asda is hoping to boost sales of fresh produce and create in-store theatre during the summer by offering hundreds of pounds worth of incentives to staff.

The supermarket is offering ‘star points’ to the store that sells the most fresh produce over the next two months - plus a weekly prize to the store that creates the most eye-catching displays.

Every week, Asda will ask staff to focus on two key lines from its fresh produce section. It will then measure sales over an eight-week period and the top-performing store in each region will receive 500 ‘star points’.

The top-selling store overall will win 1,000 star points, which are worth £1 each and can be traded for items from Asda’s online reward catalogue, cinema tickets or day-out experiences such as hot air balloon rides.

The displays will be judged on a weekly basis with the same prizes on offer as for the sales competition. Staff will have to send in pictures of their displays at 5pm to demonstrate that they have maintained the appearance of the display throughout the day.

A spokeswoman said the initiative was intended to drive sales, but was also about giving colleagues ownership of their stores and bringing out their creativity.

“We are asking colleagues to engage with the products they are selling in a different way - and bring their personality to the store, which is what Asda is always looking for.” While the incentive would boost sales, it would also encourage colleagues to have pride in their individual stores, she added.
