Asda claimed first place this week, offering 12 items on promotion and six cheapest items, including McCain's fries (£1.92), New Covent Garden carrot and coriander soup (£1.50) and Sharwood's black bean sauce (£1).

The Smirnoff vodka, though £3.47 cheaper than last week, was still cheaper at Sainsbury's.

After lagging some way behind, Morrisons was just £1.43 more expensive than Asda this week. The retailer offered six cheapest items, including the baguette (60p), Uncle Ben's rice (£1.98) and the Mr Kipling Cherry Bakewells and mixed peppers, both £1.

The Cathedral City Cheddar (£3) and Cravendale milk (£1.35) were cheapest at Tesco but, despite having 11 items on promotion, Tesco slipped to third place.

Sainsbury's only had two cheapest items: the vodka (£15.58) and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter (£1.14), but had only six items on promotion this week.

Waitrose offered none of the cheapest items and the smallest number of promotions (2). The end of an offer made its Smirnoff vodka the only one to break the £20 barrier, and its pricier pears (£2.09/kg) and vegetable spring rolls (2.63) also contributed its £82.82 basket, which would have cost a shopper £14.44 more than buying the same items in Asda.
