Nordsee

Nordsee is a European fast food restaurant chain

A government-funded scheme to create sustainable packaging from algae has launched in Germany.

The research project, called Mak Pak, brings together academics from the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven and the Alfred Wegener Institute, along with fast food restaurant chain Nordsee, in a bid to develop a sustainable, biodegradable - and even edible - food packaging alternative.

Using exclusively marine macroalgae from the North Sea, the new packaging material will be tested in branches of Nordsee.

Funding for the two-year project will come from the German ministry of agriculture.
