Iceland’s savings scheme is said to be used by hundreds of thousands of shoppers a year

Iceland is temporarily doubling the bonus awarded to customers through its savings scheme.

Until 31 August, members will get a £2 bonus for every £20 they save up in the loyalty scheme, up from the usual £1.

Iceland’s ‘Bonus Card’ loyalty scheme promises to help reduce the burden of big shops throughout the year by letting customers save for them over time. Since April this year, customers have been able to access it using an app, as well as by scanning a physical card at checkouts.

For the rest of this month, members will get the usual £1 top-up added within 48 hours of saving £20 through the scheme. An extra £1 for every £20 saved will then be added by 7 September.

Members have until 28 September to spend the extra £1 for every £20. After that date, if they have not spent at least the extra bonus, the same sum will be deducted from their card.

Iceland’s recent rollout of the scheme for Android and IoS devices was the frozen food specialist’s first app launch, allowing members to also shop online without visiting the website.

The scheme is used by “hundreds of thousands of customers” a year to spread out the cost of big shops, according to the retailer.
