Lidl will bring a touch of Italy to its stores next week with an Italian-themed week.

The in-store event, which kicks off on 27 February, will showcase 80 “authentic, hard-to-come-by” Italian food and drink products, 32 of which will be new and sold while stocks last.

The discounter also claimed lines such as Limoncino di Sorrento (£7.99/50cl) and Torroncini chocolates (£2.29/160g) would be up to 50% cheaper than at upmarket Italian deli Carluccio’s.

“A lot of these products are hard to come by in the UK and we hope the Protected Designation of Origin symbol on their packaging will relay to customers their authenticity and provenance,” said a Lidl spokeswoman.

“We’ve never had such a big in-store promotion on any type of international cuisine, but if this is a success it is something that we may do again.”

Lidl, which sold a Serrano ham at £39.99 over Christmas as part of its premium Deluxe range, will also be offering Deluxe Prosciutto Crudo dry-cured ham (£9.99 per kg) and Italiano Pecorino Toscano cheese (£6.99/500g).
