Manchester’s Boddingtons brewery is set to close next month following the failure of a council-backed campaign to keep it open.

InBev, the world’s biggest brewer, bought the Boddingtons brand in 2000, but the beer has been brewed in Manchester for 226 years.

The beer will now be produced at InBev’s breweries in Glasgow, south Wales and Preston, while the Manchester Hydes plant will close its main brewery and will continue to produce Boddingtons’ traditional cask ales only.

The closure will lead to the loss of 55 jobs although 17 of these have already been found new employment at the Boddingtons brewery near Preston.
