News that McDonald’s latest ad was directed by film-maker Edgar Wright (of Baby Driver and Shaun of the Dead fame) seems to have dismayed many of his fans online – though the likes of Steven Spielberg, David Lynch and Martin Scorsese have all taken similar jobs.

This ad is distinctively the work of Wright, whose choreographic and editing skills are his strongest suits. It swaps out McDonald’s distinctive ‘ba da ba ba ba’ sting for Yello’s irresistible 1985 single ‘Oh Yeah’ (famously used in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) and decides against showing any food or even a McDonald’s outlet.

Instead, we get an exquisitely put together scenario linking the company’s M logo with the well-timed raising of eyebrows, as an office-load of workers decide en masse to decamp to the yellow arches for lunch. No dialogue is needed as it cleverly and quirkily captures an unusual angle: the excitement of deciding on a treat.

Only a brand with as much recognition as McDonald’s could pull this off – and Wright does so with aplomb.
