Morrisons is stocking a new line of environmentally friendly eggs that meet high animal welfare standards.
Natures Nest eggs, which will be sold in 150 Morrisons stores in Cumbria and Cambridgeshire, come from farmers with biodiversity action plans to protect the environment and wildlife.
The free-range eggs have a low carbon footprint, as producers live within 20 miles of the packing plant, the packaging is made from biodegradable cardboard and the farm’s waste is burned to heat its water.
“Retailers such as Morrisons are looking for products that have the ethical provenance for animal welfare and environmental care,” said David Brass, the farmer who with his wife runs The Lakes Free Range Egg Company, which produces the brand. “Natures Nest fits the criteria well.”
The Lakes Free Range Egg Company was established in 1997 and employs almost 50 staff. It has more than 350,000 cage-free chickens.
