Al Shariat Coconut Merchant

What was your first job? Looking after cats and dogs at a veterinary clinic when I was 11. I started out aspiring to be a vet, so I convinced a clinic to let me work for them.

What’s been your worst job interview? I interviewed at a law firm and was asked weird things like ‘where do you get your news if you can’t trust the media, news agencies and things on the internet?’

What was the first music single you bought? Saint Germain, I Want You to Get Together. Still love it.

How do you describe your job to your mates? ‘I sell coconuts.’

What is the most rewarding part of your job? Through our focus on ethical sourcing, I know that for every product we sell means we are helping a farmer and their family.

What is the least rewarding part? Being far from my family (who live in other countries) and hardly ever seeing my friends. Everything comes at a cost.

What is your motto in life? I’ve had loads, but there is one that has been on my mind lately: who dares wins - it’s what the SAS use.

If you were allowed one dream perk, what would it be? More hours in a day would be great please!

If you could change one thing in grocery, what would it be? Food waste and plastic usage.

What luxury would you have on a desert island? A phone with unlimited data and battery life - just so I could call my family and friends.

What animal most reflects your personality? I’d like to say something cool like a lion, but I also love swallows.

What’s your favourite film and why? In an era where films are rivalled by some very epic TV series, can I be a bit difficult and propose Arrested Development?

What has been the most embarrassing moment in your life? How about the time I sent a ‘reply all’ to my entire law firm? Every one. All eight offices in over six countries. Oh, and I was indirectly laughing at the partners.

Which celebrity would you most like to work with and why? David Attenborough. He’s got great values and would have some really awesome stories. Plus, if he looks that good at 90, he must be doing something right.

What would your death row meal be? Anything my mum had cooked.
