Donna Baker

Managing director, Poundshop.com, on chocolate, rollercoasters, and Pretty Woman

What was your first-ever job? One of the glamorous sales assistants at Littlewoods. My first foray into retail.

What’s been your worst job interview? I remember one of my first after leaving school. They said I was overqualified so wouldn’t offer me the job. I was a bit perplexed by that at the time and still am now.

What was the first music single you bought? Hey Mickey by Toni Basil. Love it!

How do you describe your job to your mates? Professional bargain hunter. I spend my life looking for the things we all want, at prices we all love!

What is the most rewarding part of your job? When it all goes to plan, it’s the best feeling. Our customers are my ultimate motivation; if they’re happy, I’m happy and the business is happy.

What is the least rewarding part? If we let people down, I take it personally and we do our utmost to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

What is your motto in life? Life’s short, enjoy it and pick your battles wisely!

If you were allowed one dream perk, what would it be? A PA. I’m not the most organised person and have what I call a ‘messy mind.’ I would be a PA’s nightmare.

Do you have any phobias? I’m not keen on heights or rollercoasters.

If you could change one thing in grocery, what would it be? I’m currently doing it - the UK’s first online pound store.

What luxury would you have on a desert island? Chocolate. Cadbury chocolate, to be precise.

What animal most reflects your personality? I love dogs. I would probably be some sort of terrier because I’ll never give up.

What’s your favourite film and why? Pretty Woman. It’s just the ultimate love story.

What has been the most embarrassing moment in your life? On the way to school many years ago, I headed to the top deck of the bus. It was packed except for one double seat. I couldn’t believe my luck, headed straight for it, and sat in a pile of sick! Everyone knew…

Which celebrity would you most like to work with and why? I would love to work with Victoria Beckham. We’re both working mums and she seems to have such a great work ethic.
