Sir, In response to Greg Vallance's letter on Del Monte's plans to offer bananas in plastic wrappers (Letters, The Grocer, 5 March), I lecture around the world on packaging design and always use a banana as one of the greatest examples of brilliant packaging.

Why? The shape is unique and its colour offers massive standout that all major consumer brands aspire to achieve.

But the banana does so much more! It comes with its own dispensing system, it is easy to hold and very easy to open in a manner that makes consumption simple and effective.

You can tell its 'best before' date without the need for a manufacturing code and when you've finished it, its outer packaging is totally bio-degradable.

It is the most perfect piece of packaging ever invented.

The man from Del Monte should have said 'No'!
