Casamigos, George Clooney’s former tequila brand sold to Diageo in a $1bn deal last year, is expanding its range with a new mezcal due to hit the UK this year.

Made in Santiago Matatlán in Oaxaca, Mexico, Casamigos Mezcal is billed as having “harmonious hints of tamarind, pomegranate, banana and mango”, with “delicate tones of smoke, hints of liquorice and mineral nuances”.

Neither price nor release date have yet been set, nor is it clear which retailers will stock the tipple. It is $59.99(£42.80)/750ml in the US, where it is also available in a one-litre bottle.

The brand had “never settled for anything but the best and are extremely proud of what our family in Oaxaca have created” said Rande Gerber, who co-founded the brand with Clooney and property developer Mike Meldman. “Casamigos Mezcal is uniquely smooth, easy to drink and smoked to perfection.”

Casamigos made headlines last summer when it was snapped up by Diageo for $1bn, with the spirits giant touting the brand’s “significant international potential”.

This was followed in January by Bacardi’s $5bn (£3.65bn) purchase of posh tequila brand Patrón. Bacardi cited “a tremendous opportunity for the brand outside the United States”.

The WSTA last year predicted a boom in Brits’ enthusiasm for tequila, which Mintel drinks analyst Jonny Forsyth said had “reinvented itself as a sophisticated and nuanced spirit”.
