Whitening Mouthwash is ‘inspired by the skin brightening properties of alpha hydroxy acids in the beauty industry’

Premium oral care brand Waken has unveiled its first teeth-whitening product, a hydrogen peroxide-free mouthwash.

Promising to whiten teeth by up to five shades, Whitening Mouthwash (rsp: £6/500ml) was “inspired by the skin-brightening properties of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) in the beauty industry” Waken said. “Like how AHAs remove dead skin cells, Waken uses papain and bromelain – enzymes from papaya and pineapple – to remove surface stains and help brighten your smile.”

The formula is free from hydrogen peroxide, a common ingredients in whitening products, which can cause irreparable damage to teeth and gums if used in excess.

Last year, research by Which? found 58% of teeth-whitener products from online marketplaces contained more than the legal amount of hydrogen peroxide permitted for home use.

Being naturally derived, the enzymes in Waken’s new mouthwash were “kinder to your delicate mouth” the brand said.

The peppermint-flavoured Whitening Mouthwash also cares for teeth and gums with fluoride, which supports the natural repair of tooth enamel and helps to limit plaque and tartar. Like all other Waken products, it is flavoured with natural mint extract.

Packaged in fully recyclable post-consumer-recycled plastic, it will be available from Waitrose later this week.

Whitening Mouthwash is Waken’s tenth mouthwash, joining variants such as Peppermint, Spearmint, Vanilla & Mint and Strawberry & Mint. The brand also offers the likes of toothpaste, lip balm and bamboo toothbrushes.

Waken made its grocery debut in November 2019, having been launched by Simon Duffy and Rhodri Ferrier – the founders of Bulldog Skincare.
