Unilever has teamed up with Tesco to create Nice by Nature, a healthier ice lolly brand for children.

The new lineup will roll out on 11 March exclusively to Tesco freezers nationwide, just five months after the two grocery giants began their collaboration.

Nice by Nature was a “first of its kind” brand of ice lolly, according to Unilever. It is made with “just fruit and nothing else”, with no added sugar - aimed at “parents looking for a healthy treat option for their children”.

Variants are Strawberry & Raspberry, Mango & Banana and Apple & Blackcurrant (rsp: £3/6x40ml).

Each portion counts as one of the 5 a day, and provides around 23 calories (58kcals per 100ml). In comparison, Rowntrees Fruit Pastille Ice Lollies - made with fruit juice concentrate and sugar - have 86kcals per 100ml, and Del Monte 100% Juice Orange lollies have 92kcals.

Nice by Nature was a “game-changer” for its category, said Noel Clarke, Unilever vice president for refreshments.

“We saw there was a clear opportunity to do something completely different and disrupt the ice lolly category by appealing to parents who simply want to get more fruit into their kids, as well as those actively looking for healthier treats for their kids.”

The launch comes after sales of children’s ice cream multipacks soared over the past 12 months. They added 28% in value to £118.6m on volumes up 21% [Nielsen 52 w/e 26 January 2019].
