Yorkshire supermarket Abu Bakr has cuts hundreds of prices to help shoppers prepare for Ramadan

Yorkshire supermarket Abu Bakr has announced a swathe of price cuts and special offers on to help its Muslim shoppers prepare for Ramadan.

An initial 100 “essential” lines have been reduced, with more set to be added to the promotion throughout the holy month, which officially begins on 18 February, and lasts until Eid al-Fitr on 20 March.

Reductions include Heera Sun Flower oil, which has been cut by £2 from £5.99. Yaffa Premium medjool dates have also been dropped by £2 to £7.99. Meanwhile, Willow Butter, which is usually sold at £14 for a whole case, has dropped to £11.99 for Ramadan, while a case of Tate & Lyle sugar is dropping from £13.99 to £11.79.

Examples of Abu Bakr’s Ramadan multibuy deals include Shan spices, which usually retail for £1.09 each, on offer at two for £1.50.

The supermarket will also launch an “even bigger” promotion to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the three-day festival celebrating the breaking of the Ramadan fasting.

Family-owned Abu Bakr has grown to five supermarkets across Leeds and Batley since it was founded in 1981. Ramadan and Eid are key trading periods for the grocer, as well as the wider Yorkshire economy, with West Yorkshire alone home to more than 332,000 Muslims, according to the latest ONS census data from 2021.

Nationwide, Muslims spend an estimated £1.3bn during the holy month, according to a 2025 report from the think tank Equi.

Ramadan is a deeply important time for our customers and the wider Yorkshire economy,” said managing director Hamza Hussain. “Our Ramadan sale is designed to support families with affordable essentials, while also driving footfall, employment and spending across local businesses.”

He added: As a Yorkshire-based retailer, we work closely with local suppliers and staff, meaning the increased demand we see during Ramadan has a direct and positive impact on the regional economy.”

Abu Bakr’s ambitious growth plans

Last month the 22-year old Hussain was appointed as Abu Bakr’s new managing director, to spearhead its next stage of growth to new areas of the UK.

Part of those growth efforts include the launch of a new DTC delivery service called Ayah Halal, offering premium halal meat across the UK.

The Ramadan price cuts are the latest promotion from the growth chain, which last month launched a new healthy eating campaign designed to help children in the local community reach their five recommended portions of fruit and veg a day.

The offer includes promotions like two punnets of grapes for £1, three pomegranates for £1 and five oranges for £1.
