Aldi and Lidl are pushing hard to win the big Easter shop, with Aldi promising price cuts and Lidl offering loyalty members £5 off a £50 spend.
Aldi today promised £16m in price cuts across Easter ranges, including reduced champagne, prosecco and branded and own-label confectionery. Nicolas De Montbart Champagne Brut has been slashed by 29% to £9.99, while Spumante Prosecco DOC has been cut by 11% to £4.69. Easter eggs from Cadbury, including Freddo, Mini Eggs and Buttons, are available at 99p, a 40% reduction.
“With Easter falling earlier this year, we’re already seeing strong demand across our seasonal range,” said Aldi UK chief commercial officer Julie Ashfield.
“Easter is a time where families can come together to celebrate, and our recent price cuts mark our promise to shoppers that they will make significant savings each time they shop with us. From our best-selling Specially Selected Luxury Fruited Hot Cross Buns to roast dinner essentials, there’s incredible savings to be had at Aldi over the Easter holiday.”
Lidl is offering users of its Lidl Plus loyalty app £5 off a £50 shop, valid between 1-4 April and excluding alcohol.
Lidl also yesterday dropped the price of a range of Easter veg to 4p, in answer to price cuts announced by Aldi.
Lidl is selling 1kg of carrots, 500g of parsnips and individual swedes for 4p each. It is also offering a 1.8kg leg of lamb for £10.71 (£5.95 per kg), 180g of mint sauce for 59p, 300g of gravy for 99p and 2kg of white potatoes for 8p. It brings the cost of Easter dinner to £1.56 per person, according to Lidl.
Aldi is offering 2kg of potatoes, 1kg of carrots, 1kg of onions, 500g of parsnips, garlic and individual swedes for 4p each. It has also dropped the price of a whole leg of lamb from £6.19 to £5.95 per kg.
Morrisons has gone just as low as the discounters on some Easter veg lines, offering 1kg carrots, 500g parsnips and a whole swede for 4p each.
