Aldi currently has more than 1,050 UK stores

Aldi is asking the public to suggest where it should open stores, and says the most popular areas will be taken into consideration in its expansion programme.

The discounter currently has more than 1,050 UK stores, having opened its 1,000th in September 2023. Its ambition is to have 1,500 in the long term.

Locations due to get a new Aldi within a matter of months include Ashford in Kent, Eastbourne in Sussex, and Caterham in Surrey, as part of its focus on expanding in the south east.

“We’ve always believed that great-quality food should be within everyone’s reach and many communities would therefore still benefit from having an Aldi nearby,” said Aldi UK MD of national real estate Jonathan Neale.

“We’re always looking at key places where we see potential, but we also want to hear directly from the public about where the demand is greatest. Their input is invaluable as we continue to grow and bring Aldi’s unbeatable value to more areas across Britain.”

Consumers are invited to nominate an area for a new Aldi by emailing NextNewStore@aldi.co.uk, with the town as the subject line. The discounter is asking for submissions by Sunday 8 June, and plans to share the results and unveil its next round of priority locations later this year.

Aldi ran a similar initiative last year, which saw locations in London, Manchester and Derbyshire recognised as priorities. Progress has already been made to bring a new store near to Chesterfield in Derbyshire, according to the supermarket, with planning permission recently secured for a site on Ringwood Road, Brimington.

Aldi’s appeal for new site nominations comes a week after Lidl said it would open 40 UK stores this year in a £500m expansion investment.
