Aldi has moved its own-label beer to a ‘snap pack’ packaging format, ditching cardboard in favour of glue to hold four cans together.
The change is being rolled out across stores in 2025 for Aldi’s Galahad, Sainte Etienne and Brasserie beers, in a move expected to save 412 tonnes of packaging annually.
Aldi said the glue – which is already used for some branded beers, and by Co-op on own-label lines – burned off during recycling so did not create any additional waste. In contrast, cardboard had its own carbon impact and needed to be recycled separately to the aluminium cans.
“We know our customers care about the environment, and so do we,” said Aldi UK national sustainability director Luke Emery. ”That’s why we’re constantly challenging ourselves to find smarter, more sustainable ways to package our products.
“By switching to snap pack packaging, we’re taking meaningful action to prevent waste – without compromising on quality or convenience. It’s a small change that makes a big impact.”
