Aldi has released a list of 23 stores in line for upgrades and improvements by the end of the year.

They include two – in Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria and Ebbw Vale in Wales – which are undergoing major extensions.

The other 21 are getting upgrades including refreshed fixtures, enhanced layouts and improved sustainability features, according to Aldi.

The plans are the latest in a long-term upgrade programme in which Aldi has revamped more than 500 of its UK stores, including modernising the layouts with brighter, wider aisles and devoting more space to fresh and chilled products.

The discounter also plans to open a new store a week on average between now and the end of the year. It currently has over 1,050 UK stores and aims to grow the number to 1,500 in the long term.

“Our investment into our store estate is part of our ongoing commitment to provide the very best shopping experience for our customers,” said Aldi UK national real estate MD Jonathan Neale.

“By extending and refreshing our existing sites, we’re providing more sustainable and convenient stores, ensuring they continue to meet the needs of the communities they serve for years to come.”
