Aldi is taking on McDonald’s in a battle of hash browns, by giving away free ones outside the fast food chain’s restaurants.
Aldi will wheel up its hash brown vans outside selected McDonald’s at 11.01am – one minute after McDonald’s stops serving breakfast.
The vans will then give away free Aldi Oakhurst Breakfast Hash Browns, usually priced at £1.99 for a pack of 10, compared with £1.49 for a single McDonald’s hash brown.
The free Aldi hash browns will be offered “all day at select locations around the country later this week”, starting in London on Thursday, according to Aldi.
Aldi said a survey had revealed 62% of UK adults thought 11am was too early to stop serving breakfast. One in five (22%) said they would prefer breakfast food to be available all day.
“Brits love their hash browns and our Oakhurst Breakfast Hash Browns have developed quite the loyal following, with over half a million breakfast hash browns sold in store per week,” said Aldi UK chief commercial officer Julie Ashfield.
“That’s why our hash brown van has been designed with one purpose – to bring the nation their crispy potato fix at any time of the day, not just before 11am.”
