Tom Hampson appointed Asda marketing boss

Tom Hampson is an experienced retail marketer, having previously worked for B&Q, Sainsbury’s, Itsu and Morrisons, among others

Asda has appointed Tom Hampson as its new VP of marketing.

Hampson will join the retailer from B&Q in June, to replace former marketing chief Adam Zavalis, who left the supermarket last year.

He will report directly into chief customer officer Rachel Eyre, as part of Asda’s new-look customer and marketing team.

An experienced retail marketer, Hampson previously spent nearly eight years at Sainsbury’s, where he rose to head of new business marketing. He left in 2014 to join Netto UK as marketing director, before consecutive two-year spells at Itsu and childwear brand Mamas & Papas.

Prior to his most recent role as marketing director ay B&Q, he spent a year at Morrisons as interim director of loyalty and insight.

“Tom is an experienced and passionate customer and marketing leader who has led transformation and growth through marketing with a number of major UK retailers,” said Eyre, announcing Hampson’s appointment today.

“He brings deep expertise in customer insight, proposition development and team leadership and will play a pivotal role in driving the growth agenda for two powerhouse British brands”

Hampson joins at what is a critical time for Asda as CEO Allan Leighton looks to turn its fortunes around and rebuild its withered market share.

Asda poached Eyre from Morrisons in June ahead of an overhaul of Asda’s loyalty, marketing and own label efforts, following the departure of former chief customer officer David Hills last year.

Eyre subsequently appointed Charlotte Rhodes as Asda’s new head of own label in December.

Chris Chalmers, who previously spent five years as Asda digital marketing director, was later appointed as its vice president of data and loyalty in October.

Previous marketing chief Zavalis announced his departure from the supermarket after two years in November.
