British American Tobaccos’s plans to open its first cigarette factory in China were put on hold yesterday due to concerns over its approval by the government regulator.
Although BAT announced it had reached an agreement to build an £800m factory in China the state tobacco monopoly administration is said to have denied giving the go-ahead, according to newspaper reports.
BAT said the approval came from central government rather than the regulator.
The factory would have the capacity to produce 100bn cigarettes a year.
