Boots is celebrating the landmark of 30 million packaging items saved from landfill in the first six years of a scheme incentivising shoppers to return empties.
The health & beauty retailer first rolled out drop-off bins for hard-to-recycle health & beauty packaging such as toothpaste tubes to 50 stores in 2020. The scheme is now in more than 800 stores.
The Recycle at Boots scheme rewards shoppers with £5-worth of Boots Advantage Card points when return five eligible packaging items and spend £10 in store.

Toothpaste tubes are the most commonly returned item, with 2.6 million recycled so far, according to Boots. Baby wipe packs are next (2.4 million) followed by face serum packaging (1.1 million) and moisturiser empties (910,000).
“Recycle at Boots is a great example of how we’re responding to evolving customer expectations and using our scale to make sustainable choices more accessible,” said Boots head of ESG Candice Smith.
“The scheme was developed to help customers recycle items that are difficult to dispose of through household collections, while encouraging more sustainable behaviours through education and rewards.
“It reflects our commitment to supporting customers, caring for our communities and using the trust people place in Boots to help make positive choices easier every day.”
